Students and Parents,
This year students will be allowed and encouraged to bring technology that will help support learning to the classroom. This would include iphones, ipads, itouch, android phones and tablets, laptop computers, kindle and nook readers. The county policy concerning this is detailed in the "Student Code of Conduct" booklet your student will bring home to you the first day of school. There is an abbreviated version in the student handbook, which students will be reading together in first period of the first week of school. Additionally, this information is posted on the FCHS website at http://fchstigers.org/byot.html. You may also register your electronic devices at this site. I would also like to share my opinions on how this technology will be used in the German classroom at FCHS and FMS.
First, I embrace the opportunity to use these mobile devices for learning in the classroom, and I already have in mind many ways I would like us to utilize them. It remains to be seen exactly how intricately we can incorporate them until I ascertain how many of my students will have them available to bring to class, and how many parents will commit to ensure the students will bring them fully charged on a daily basis. Students will not be allowed to charge their devices in the classroom. There are only a limited number of outlets.
I will welcome the use of mobile devices for taking notes or recording practice exercises. However, students are still required to focus on learning German. If students choose to use the devices for texting, participating in social media, playing games or engaging in other activites not related to learning German, or if their devices are turned on or in view during quizzes or tests , I will not welcome their devices in my classroom. I will also fill out the appropriate administrative report, as noted in the syllabus.
Whether or not a student brings a mobile device to class, he/she should also bring paper, pen and pencil to class to complete work that is to be done in class and turned in at the end of the hour.
For anyone who plans to bring a mobile device for use in the classroom, I have some suggestions for free downloadable apps that are available for both apple and android products. I would recommend that these be downloaded before attending class. All students will find these very helpful.
